The Uprising was a horrific
event, a storm which swept before it everyone
unfortunate enough to be in its path. Even
though most of the killings took place in
August and September,
1862, there continued to be killings until 1865. The current
peacefulness of the vast areas covered by the
Uprising belies the panic and sheer terror
experienced by those caught up in it. Now, in
addition to historic markers and a few
surviving period buildings, only the gravestones
of the victims remain, broadcasting their
inscribed message to those of us who pass by
today.
—Curtis Dahlin, from
Dakota Uprising Victims
